Підручник містить систематизований виклад основних розділів медичної психології, викладених з позиції цілісної особистості, яка на різні впливи оточення реагує різноманітними психічними та соматичними змінами. Уперше комплекс медикопсихологічних знань подано з точку зору психології особистості та у поєднанні з психіатрією, психосоматичною медициною, соціальною психологією. Пацієнт розглядається не тільки як об’єкт діагностики і терапії, але й як суб’єкт зі складним психологічним світом, що індивідуально реагує на хворобу і умови мікросоціального середовища. Розвиток і поглиблення психологічного аспекту медичної моделі хвороби дозволяють сприймати хворого не як нозологічну одиницю, а як неповторну індивідуальність. Значна увага приділена психології лікувальної взаємодії, морально-етичним засадам роботи з пацієнтами. Процес лікування різних захворювань, що супроводжується низкою психологічних явищ, пов’язаних з внутрішньою картиною хвороби, особистістю хворого, лікаря і терапевтичними методами, що застосовуються, розглядається як явище, що чинить як позитивний, так і негативний вплив.
