In the article the wide-spread in characteristics of the essence of personality one-sidedness of personality is concerned that corresponds as a rule to some priorities of the ideological, political or social kind. Through the analysis of the phenomenon of variability, he illustrates the dependence of some conceptual definitions of personality from their author’s meta-psychological position. The insufficiency of corresponding projections into psychological practice is shown, as well as the splitting of the psychology of personality into the academic area and the practical one. The mentioned definitions do not disclose the social instrumentality and individual sense of personality for an agent of social intercourse. The imperfectness of the methodological means of the study of personality, in its psychological sources, is emphasised. The author proposes to study such sources in order to reveal the psychological function of the personality as the phenomenon of phylogenetic and ontological nature.
