Перехід від індустріальної до постіндустріальної цивілізації, що розпочався в останні десятиліття, призводить до підвищення наукомісткості виробництва, впровадження безвідходних технологій, мініатюризації (аж до нанорівня) та гуманізації техніки. Як зазначає О.В. Сергєєв, “... останнє знаходить свій вияв як у структурі, так і в характері її застосування; збільшується виробництво техніки, призначеної для задоволення потреб Людини, для надання праці більш творчого характеру”. Формування інформаційного суспільства, що супроводжує цей процес, призводить до інтернаціоналізації та децентралізації виробництва, створення розподілених виробничих структур.
